Berlin Metropolitan School /
Sauerbruch Hutton
Design for a modern two story school extension above an existing GDR-Era Plattenbau in Berlin. The new spaces provide additional classrooms, music rooms, a library with access to a roof garden, administration offices as well as a large auditorium for gatherings and school events.
The construction work needed to be executed during school hours and was designed in a prefabricated timber system that ensured speedy erection with minimal disturbance. As the new timber structure is lightweight it could rest on the existing foundations without any additional reinforcement to the structure.
Timber is a healthy and sustainable building material, and has been left visible to the interior, with the expressed geometry creating warm, striking spaces. The exterior is clad in copper. This is a material that will age beautifully, and that matches the warm tone of the brick slips on the existing facade, while at the same time providing an elegant contrast and a clean, modern aesthetic.
